A new study from the federal government shows that Alabamians who get health insurance through their employer pay the lowest family premiums in the nation.
The numbers reflect premiums paid in 2019 and come from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), which is conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
In a release promoting the results of the new survey Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama CEO Tim Vines said, “Our company consistently looks for ways to control healthcare costs so we can continue to offer our members quality healthcare coverage at the most affordable price possible.”
The 10 lowest premiums paid as follows:
1. Alabama – $17,734
2. Arkansas – $17,773
3. Mississippi – $17,860
4. North Dakota – $18,400
5. Utah – $18,674
6. Nevada – $18,720
7. Tennessee – $18,748
8. Iowa – $18,752
9. Kansas – $18,867
10. Louisiana – $19,032

The number one ranking caps off a decade of Alabama placing in the top 10 lowest family premiums.
The amount paid by citizens of Alabama is $2,752 less than the national average.
“Taking care of our customers and putting them first remains one of our top priorities,” added Vines on Tuesday.
“We recognize our members have a choice when it comes to selecting their health insurance carrier, and that is something we do not take for granted,” he concluded.
