Rogers: U.S. Should Enforce Current Gun Laws Not Pass New Ones

Senators Joe Manchin and Pat Toomey told media outlets today that they’ve reached a bipartisan compromise on background checks ahead of a gun control vote tomorrow in the Senate. Fox News says the compromise “would expand background checks for sales at gun shows and online but exempt some other transactions like personal sales among hunters and family members.”

The NRA immediately responded to the deal with a press release saying that “expanding background checks at gun shows will not prevent the next shooting, will not solve violent crime and will not keep our kids safe in schools.”

Alabama Congressman Mike Rogers also expressed skepticism with the deal.

“As a gun owner myself, I strongly oppose any further infringement on our Second Amendment rights,” Rogers said. “Though details are forthcoming on the Senate deal, before going forward with any new gun control legislation, the Obama Administration should enforce the laws already on the books.”

This week, Rogers sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder urging him to enforce current gun laws rather than support additional restrictions on the constitutional rights of law-abiding, gun-owning citizens.

In the letter, which you can read below, Congressman Rogers said he is “deeply concerned by the Obama Administration’s call for Congress to enact new laws that further restrict our Constitutional rights.” He also noted that statistics show prosecutions for gun crimes have plummeted with Holder at the helm of the DOJ. “According to information released by the House Committee on the Judiciary, prosecutions of individuals violating federal firearm statutes have fallen to the lowest levels in over a decade under your leadership.”

Rogers told Yellowhammer this morning that he will continue to fight for Alabamians’ Second Amendment rights and will keep pushing back against the President’s wide-ranging gun control agenda.
