The letter was sent on the heels of the announcement that Immigration, Customs and Enforcement (ICE) director John Morton will resign in July.
Rogers has been a long-standing critic of Morton, claiming his handling of the agency has allowed “backdoor amnesty.” In his letter to Obama dated June 19, Rogers encouraged the president to nominate someone to succeed Morton whose motivation is enforcing the rule of law, not politics.
“[T]his important position opening provides [President Obama] the chance to show he’s finally serious about enforcing our immigration laws,” Rogers said in a statement. “I urge President Obama to nominate someone who will take lead when it comes to immigration enforcement, who will uphold our current immigration laws and someone Americans can trust.”
In his letter, Rogers put forth a challenge to Obama, who had asked previously called on Congress to “get serious” about the immigration reform bill that is currently being debated before both the House and Senate.
“You have asked Congress to get serious about immigration reform,” Rogers wrote. “I believe that discussion can’t be had in good faith unless you and your administration get serious about immigration enforcement and border security. That starts with a new director of ICE who respects the will of Congress, the American people, and the rule of law.”
