The Birmingham Stallions look to be on their way out of town.

According to a report from James Larsen and the Pro Football Newsroom, who have covered the UFL heavily since its inception, the Stallions are officially going to be relocated by the league with a location to be announced later.

The Stallions were rumored to be leaving around this time last year, but an agreement was reached for them to play this past spring season at UAB’s Protective Stadium. In the first game of the season and the debut of head coach AJ McCarron, there was an impressive crowd of more than 18,000 people, but attendance numbers dwindled as the team’s performance sputtered.

The league did not want to continue having the Stallions play at Protective due to its large size and capacity making it impossible to fill up for a spring game, and according to the story, the team was denied the request to play at the Hoover Metropolitan Complex.

“They said the stadium didn’t provide the atmosphere they were seeking and did not fit in their business model,” said Jimmie Stephens, chair of the Jefferson County Commission in a statement obtained by ALdotcom. “I’m disappointed that their business model did not fit a state-of-the-art, brand new stadium, which would accommodate whatever they needed, including future growth.”

Billionaire Mike Repole — who runs the business operations of the UFL — put out a statement last summer telling fans that more attendance is going to be needed the upcoming season in order to keep the Stallions in Birmingham beyond the one final season, and unfortunately that momentum was not able to keep rolling.

Where the franchise is moving to — and whether or not McCarron sticks on in the new city — remains to be seen, but it’s certainly a sad day for the most successful franchise in the league since its founding.
