Beloved Selma musician fatally shot in Walmart parking lot; Community mourns and calls for change

Marcus Martin, a 40-year-old Selma resident and gifted musician known for his dedication to his church and community, was tragically killed on January 31, after being struck by gunfire in the parking lot of a Selma Walmart. Martin was sitting in his vehicle when the gunfire erupted between four young men in an unrelated argument. Also in the car was Martin’s mother who escaped unharmed.

The loss of Marcus Martin has left a deep void in the Selma community. Friends, family, and fellow church members have shared their grief and heartfelt tributes, remembering his talent, kindness, and unwavering joy. Known for his passion for music, Martin served as a talented musician at several churches in the Selma area and also in Detroit. His skill at the piano and uplifting spirit brought life to worship services and choir rehearsals, according to friends of Martin.

AL.com shared that Maleeka Holloway, a friend of the family,  described the heartbreak and hope caused by the loss.

“While we are heartbroken that he was taken away from us so soon, we do not mourn as those who have no hope,” said Holloway. “We are prayerful his death will bring about change in this community.”

While the community grieves, authorities have made significant progress in the investigation. All four suspects involved in the shooting have been arrested and charged. Two juveniles, ages 16 and 17, were taken into custody on Saturday night. On Monday, 19-year-old Tashun Roderick Benard Hunter was arrested, followed by the arrest of 20-year-old Willie James Hunter on Tuesday. The suspects face charges of murder and shooting into an unoccupied vehicle. Court hearings for the individuals are currently pending.

Funeral services have been scheduled for Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 11:00 AM from Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, with Reverend James Perkins, Jr., officiating and Reverend Anton Trimble serving as eulogist.
