Barry Moore blasts fleeing Texas Democrats: ‘Anything they can do to resist the will of the people and to control power’ – ‘That’s what they’re all about’

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) is criticizing Democrats in the Texas Legislature who fled to Illinois in an attempt to stifle Republicans’ ability to lawfully redistrict the state.

Democratic lawmakers fled to Illinois over the weekend, preventing the Texas House of Representatives from reaching a basic quorum on Monday. This prevents the lawmaking body from voting on a new map that would heavily favor Republicans.

Moore discussed the issue Wednesday on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program.”

“I mean, they were elected by the people,” Moore said. “They ought to have a right to draw the districts as the people see fit. They are the Vox Populi, the voice of the people. And certainly, the Democrats can’t win on policy, so they either suffer from [Trump Derangement Syndrome], or they take everything to court to try to get the wins where they can. And so the legislature has drawn a map, and then the Democrats just decide not to show up to work. So Greg Abbott and them can actually sign a bill that allows the redistricting process to move forward, but Mark Elias and those folks have sued across the country to try to win in the courts, to draw these districts.”

Moore has experience with how redistricting can affect a state’s Congressional delegation. Alabama was forced to change it’s district map last year, forcing Moore to run against his colleague U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) in a Republican primary in order to keep his place in the House.

“And that’s what happened in Alabama,” he explained. “We lost. It was based on race. That’s the thing where we talk about not being racist. And yet, so many of these districts are drawn based on race. And that’s not the way it needs to be done. It needs to be drawn by the people who are elected in the state legislatures to draw their districts. And so I think we’re going to see some, some reversal, a lot of that, and in many ways, I think that’ll help the Republicans at the national level to have better representation in DC, to actually have the voice of the people represented in D.C.”

Moore also took a shot at the Texas Democrats over their hypocrisy because they ran away to Illinois.

“[T]he way they gerrymandered those districts in the last cycle to eliminate Republicans was unbelievable, after that census, and it was a travesty,” Moore said about Illinois. “But, you know, that was their legislature.”

“But if Illinois can do it in my golly, Texas ought to be able to do it too,” Moore continued. “And so what’s fair for the goose is fair for the gander? And again, it’s about power. With the left, they want to control power. We don’t go sue them, you know, when they draw a district the way they think that their legislature should draw it, we don’t get it. We show up to work. We do our job. But Texas is on the right track and and I think that will help us in the midterms as well.”
