Barry Moore agrees with Tuberville: ‘We need to nuke the filibuster’

(Business Council of Alabama)

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) thinks it’s time for Republicans to get rid of the filibuster to pass President Donald Trump’s agenda.

Moore is echoing recent statements by U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) who has been openly calling for his GOP colleagues in the Senate to abolish the rule.

On Wednesday night, with U.S. House approval and President Trump’s signature, the federal government reopened after the longest government shutdown in history.

Tuberville, who is not running for another term in the Senate so he can run for Alabama Governor, argued this week that if they don’t nuke the filibuster, there could be even longer shutdowns in the near future.

“They’re going to shut it down again, okay? There are going to be four or five more shutdowns,” Tuberville said. “Let’s just kick the Democrats to the side. We know what’s best for the American people.”

Moore, who is hoping to take Tuberville’s place in the Senate in 2026, discussed the issue Wednesday on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program.”

“Absolutely, cause you know, the two Democrat senators that held it up was [Joe] Manchin and [Kyrsten] Sinema, they’re gone,” Moore said. “And so the next time, within the first hour, if the Senate turns Democrat, when, and if it ever does, they will nuke it day one and drive this Marxist agenda across the finish line. So we have 36 months with President Trump in office. We need to nuke the filibuster.”

The congressman said he thinks the threat of abolishing the filibuster is why Democrats ultimately caved on the shutdown.

“[N]uking it was the reason that Schumer had to go ahead and cave when he did,” he said, “because we would have gotten all the credit then.”

Moore said this change will finally allow Congress to pass Trump’s agenda.

“Knowing that the Democrats are going to do it, and seeing that this is an opportunity, with three years of President Trump’s administration to get many of his executive orders codified,” he said. “But not only that, to get get get this country back to the American people, where the voice is actually back to the American people, if we want to push President Trump’s agenda, we can’t allow Schumer and five or six Democrats to hold up the whole government so they can resist President Trump’s America first agenda.”

“I think Senator Tuberville is right on this,” he added. “I think the President’s right on this. Certainly us talking about it probably forced Schumer’s hand. But at this point, if we want to really take care of the American people and move this America first agenda, this President, who won all the swing states, won the popular vote, there is no doubt in my mind that we need to move and make sure that his agenda is completed by the time we finish his first or his term.”
