In this week’s edition, Auburn took care of business in Nashville and now faces a road test at Arkansas to secure bowl eligibility and likely an above .500 season.
Make no mistake—with the Tigers at five wins and New Mexico State coming to town next week, barring a complete and utter disaster of truly epic proportions, Auburn will achieve the six wins needed for bowl eligibility.
But with three games left, the Tigers have the opportunity to end the first year of the Hugh Freeze era even better than that. For clarity’s sake, let’s assume Auburn is going to win the matchup against New Mexico State and secure a minimum 6-6 record.
The opportunity this week at Arkansas, where Auburn is a three-point underdog, is massive for securing that seventh win. Should Auburn have seven wins going into the unpredictable Iron Bowl at Jordan-Hare Stadium, the first season under Hugh Freeze could be considered a success.
Although things looked dire during the toughest part of the schedule for this year’s team, ending the year with a respectable record and even a win streak would speak volumes about what Freeze has been able to accomplish in year one.
It all starts in Fayetteville this week with the Tigers having a chance to win a third game in a row in the SEC against an Arkansas team coming off their biggest win of the season—a 39-36 OT victory over Florida.
Time will tell if Freeze and Company can get it done.
