The Auburn Tigers have won their first NIT in school history, defeating Tulsa in an overtime thriller to hold on and claim victory 92-86, ending what was a rough first season for Steven Pearl on a very high note.

Auburn had to hold on after surrendering a near 20-point lead and hit a late three to tie the game back up and force an extra period, the Tigers handles business during the overtime period to pull away and safely earn the win.

“I’m really proud of these kids. They found a way to stay together and beat five pretty good teams,” Pearl said after the win.

“I’m incredibly grateful to these guys. They could’ve packed it up and they didn’t. These are unbelievable young men with great character from great families. I’m incredibly honored and proud to be their coach…They showed they love their university. They love Auburn and they played for Auburn. They showed a ton of resilience. They showed what Auburn men are all about. It’s a great way to end the season.”

Kevin Overton was named the most outstanding player of the tournament following his clutch three to force overtime and strong showing overall in the NIT. He had 26 points on the night while Tahaad Pettiford added 24 of his own.

While it’s not the banner Auburn fans were hoping for this year, it is tremendous momentum headed into next season and should be something Pearl can build his program off of.
