Auburn QB Jackson Arnold: Iron Bowl rivalry ‘more hate-fueled’ than Texas-Oklahoma

Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold said this week that the Iron Bowl rivalry between Auburn and Alabama is “more hate-fueled” than the storied Red River rivalry he experienced as a former Oklahoma Sooner.

When the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers lace it up on the gridiron, more than just a year’s worth of bragging rights are on the line. This is a game that has decided seasons, championships, and the very hierarchy of the state.

With SEC expansion to include Texas and Oklahoma, the conference has gotten its first taste of another iconic rivalry between its two newest brands.

One player who has experienced that on both sides is new Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold, who transferred from Oklahoma to Auburn this offseason. This week at SEC Media Days, he gave a bold take about which rivalry is bigger.

“Honestly, OU/Texas there’s a lot of hate,” Arnold began when asked to compare the two. “But like, I think the people here CANNOT stand Alabama. It’s unbelievable. OU/Texas is very similar though, it’s not far off. I feel like those are probably the two best rivalries in college football. But if you mention Alabama here they’ll look at you funny.”

Arnold also offered an incredible glimpse into how deep the rivalry runs inside Auburn’s facilities.

“We even have a rule that you can’t wear red in our facility at all. If you do, you lose points and have to do up-downs and stuff.”

He will get to find out how much it means to his new fanbase when the Tide come to Jordan-Hare this November.
