Every Tuesday we present The Auburn Corner, where we’ll get into a different topic on the Auburn Tigers, break down the previous game, preview the upcoming game, and everything in between.
In this week’s edition, Auburn is 0-4 in the SEC with a golden opportunity to grab its first conference win.
Make no mistake about it, Auburn is offensively challenged. Things are a mess on that side of the ball, especially in the passing game.
That being said, things might be even somehow worse for the Mississippi State Bulldogs, who are down to Vanderbilt transfer Mike Wright following a shoulder injury to senior Will Rogers.
Rogers’ status for the Auburn game seems to be in doubt, with head coach Zach Arnett saying “he’s progressing how we thought and if he’s able to go, he will go. If he’s not, he won’t.”
This sounds like coach speak for he’s banged up and probably won’t be able to play, but has a chance.
State was able to get a win over Arkansas, but it was more due to a lack of ability to score from Arkansas than a great performance from Wright. The Bulldogs won 7-3, and Wright only threw 12 passes, completing 8 for 85 yards.
With the game at home, it’s a matchup that Auburn should, and really has to win. The Tigers are through the toughest part of their schedule really have three straight winnable conference games between Mississippi State, a trip to Vanderbilt, and a trip to Arkansas.
If the Tigers can at least win two of the three, becoming bowl eligible is right in front of them as the sixth win presents itself in a home game against New Mexico State.
But it all starts this week against Mississippi State. Auburn is favored by a touchdown and kickoff is 2:30 p.m. at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
