The Auburn Tigers earned a much-needed victory on Saturday afternoon on the road against the Arkansas Razorbacks, using a very impressive second half comeback to claim a 33-24 victory.
At the half, Auburn trailed 21-10 following a late Jackson Arnold pick six as the Tigers were attempting to take a lead in the red zone.
To get to that point though, star wide receiver Cam Coleman put the first points on the board with one of the most impressive catches of the season with a one-handed grab midway through the first quarter to give Auburn the lead.
The Razorbacks would score back-to-back touchdowns to grab a lead from there though, and the pick six by Arnold put them up by two scores going into the break.
With his job on the line, Freeze decided he had seen enough and put transfer backup Ashton Daniels into the game for the second half, which instantly delivered a spark to the offense.
It was only field goals in the third quarter though as the Tigers, but Auburn staying in the game with sets of three points allowed the defense to do what it’s done all year and give them a chance to win. With just over nine minutes left in the game and trailing 24-19, star cornerback Rayshawn Pleasant made the kind of play that saves a season, picking off Taylen Green and taking it back the other way for a score to give the Tigers their first lead since the first quarter.
From there, it was a turnovers fest for the Auburn defense, forcing a fumble on the next possession before Pleasant had another pick on the following one, and two more field goals off those turnovers put it out of reach.
Though he threw just eight passes, Daniels did a nice job in the second half of managing the game and allowing his defense to help them get the win, completing six of them for 77 yards and not turning the ball over.
Jeremiah Cobb was the leading rusher with 153 yards while Daniels accounted for 35 yards of his own off the ground.
With Hugh Freeze safe for another week, Auburn has a chance to stay on the right track with a home game against Kentucky and a chance to pull within just one victory of bowl eligibility. It’s been a long last month or so for Auburn and they were beyond due for a win.
Freeze and his team have earned some celebrating after this one.
