Auburn AD John Cohen gives strange analogy when asked about Hugh Freeze hot seat status

Things have not been going well for the Auburn Tigers as of late, dropping another SEC game they had a great chance to win on Saturday night against the Georgia Bulldogs.

While there was some questionable officiating and outside factors that kept Auburn from building on their dominant start, they once again completely disappeared offensively in the second half after dominating the first, basically handing the game over to Georgia.

For three years now, the theme around Hugh Freeze’s team has been an inability to handle any sort of adversity and wilting when the going gets tough. It’s starting to feel like the beginning of the end, and athletics director John Cohen who will be making that decision was asked directly this week on Freeze’s status.

His answer — while he did say that’s not his expectation for Freeze to be canned — did not exactly inspire a ton of confidence that he is safe from the hot seat.

“I don’t know if I’m going to walk outside and my car is going to start or not, I think it is,” Cohen said in an exclusive interview with AL.com. “I have an expectation it will. But if my car doesn’t start enough, then I will evaluate that and make decisions about my car. But that’s not my expectation at this point about our football program.”

Further clarifying that Freeze still has the locker room belief and is still recruiting, Cohen did not close the door at all on things potentially changing.

“Is the locker room still buying in? Are we still bringing in the right types of student athletes, both out of the portal and from the high school and junior college ranks? And are our kids getting better? And are they giving a great effort? That’s the template for me. Those are the questions I have to answer for myself in any program that we have.”

Freeze still has a chance to salvage things, but the season is not moving in a good direction, and that noise is only going to get louder if the Tigers continue to lose. It’s worth monitoring closely over the next couple of weeks.
