Arrest made in robbery and assault of esteemed Montgomery businessman

An arrest has been made following the assault and armed robbery last week of Montgomery businessman Jim Massey III.

Last week, news broke that Massey III had been violently assaulted, bound, and robbed at gunpoint at his business – Jim Massey’s Cleaners – in the 500 block of South Street in Montgomery.

Massey told WSFA News that four men entered this business using force and tied him up, beating him and holding a gun to his head and demanded the code to the business’s safe.

According to a release from the United States Department of Justice, on Wednesday law enforcement arrested 58-year-old Zedekiah Sykes, on charges of armed robbery, carjacking, and brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a federal crime of violence.

Sykes is facing federal charges for the crime, which was revealed after the unsealing of Sykes’ criminal complaint on Friday.

The arrest took place after an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Montgomery Police Department, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), and the Metro Area Crime Suppression (MACS) Task Force, with assistance from the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office. Sykes will make his initial appearance in federal court this afternoon at 1:00pm.

If convicted on all charges, Sykes faces a sentence of seven years to life in prison with no parole in the federal system.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation that a crime has been committed. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Sykes was scheduled to make his initial appearance in federal court Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. CST.
