Every Republican in Alabama’s delegation to the U.S. House voted in favor of a bill Thursday to deport illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes.
Alabama’s two Democratic members, U.S. Reps. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) and Shomari Figures (D-Mobile), also voted in favor of the measure.
The Preventing Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, led by U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), passed with mostly Republican votes. Only 61 Democratic members voted in favor of the bill, while 145 Democrats voted against it. It is the second immigration bill to pass the House this session.
U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) praised the bill passage, but blasted Democrats who voted against it.
“This morning, I proudly voted to deport violent illegal immigrants who prey on American women,” Moore said. “145 Democrats voted to shield criminals instead. House Republicans stand with mothers, daughters, and sisters—not violent criminals.”

U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) said the bill was necessary to protect women in the country.
“[House GOP] just passed H.R. 30, the Preventing Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, to ensure the safety of women in our communities,” Palmer said. “145 Democrats voted against this bill.”
