Legislation sponsored by State Rep. Laura Hall (D-Huntsville) that would allow for no-excuse absentee voting has attracted a lot of attention as of late because it initially received support from Secretary of State John Merrill.
Although Merrill has backed off his support of the bill’s premise, it remains a concern for Republicans, according to Alabama Republican Party chairman John Wahl.
Wahl, who was elected to the post just days ago, replacing Terry Lathan, said he had heard from the Alabama GOP members with concerns.
During an appearance on Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5’s “The Jeff Poor Show” on Tuesday, Wahl said it was his hope the Alabama Legislature would not pass the bill.
“That’s the number one phone call I get on legislation,” he said. “Party members are extremely concerned about that. I think the Republican members of the legislature are concerned about that. I honestly — certainly hope, think that will not be passed this session.”
