ALGOP Chairman urges state lawmakers to pass ‘success sequence’ legislation

Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl called on State House Representatives to pass a bill that would require schools teach the “success sequence” in the Yellowhammer State.

According to the bill, the curriculum is a “three-pronged framework for youths and young adults based on research from diverse institutions,” which says that “individuals who complete at least a high school education, obtain full-time employment, and marry before having children are overwhelmingly less likely to live in poverty in adulthood.”

The legislation passed the Senate, but is being held up in the House as some Democrats have argued that the bill marginalizes those who don’t come from a traditional two parent household or those who have gone through a divorce themselves.

Wahl discussed the issue Friday on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program.”

“What common sense that schools would actually teach things that would help people have a better, more productive and safer life,” Wahl said. “And that’s really what this comes down to.”

The bill was originally introduced in the upper chamber by State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur). The legislation sites statistics that proves how this curriculum could help students in the state.

“We know this is not hypothetical, right? We know from from research, from polling, from looking at historical data, this is absolutely what helps children grow into successful adults that can provide for their families,” Wahl continued. “But more importantly, when you ask, when you look at the research and ask people, are they happy? You know, are you happy in your life? Are you happy with with your life experience? Whatever monetary faces they have, whether they’re wealthy, whether they’re middle class, whether they’re low income, they’re all happier if they follow those basic things, finish school, get married before having children, have children and have a family unit. That is what makes people the most happy. And so this is more than even just success or a healthy society. This is what people will be more happy with in their lives if they follow this model.”

Wahl said as a Christian he knows the value of these concepts.

“And look, I’m a man of faith, and this model really goes back to Biblical concepts,” he explained. “It’s about following the instructions of the One who created us. And shocker, he knows what would make us happy, and he gave us the work, he gave us the way to accomplish that. And I think absolutely, would love to see that bill get passed, and I’ll be working at it in the halls of the state capitol.”
