Alabamians remember 9/11: Events across the state

Alabamians are patriotic, freedom-loving people who are appreciative of those who have served our nation.

September 11, 2025 will mark the 24th anniversary of the attacks by those who hate our freedom. It is hard to believe it has been almost a quarter-century since the attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and the Pentagon.

The people of Alabama will never forget.

This week, there will be commemorations of 9/11 across Alabama, some of them quite creative.

On Thursday, September 11th, Hancock Whitney Stadium at the University of South Alabama will hold a Stair Climb Challenge from 6 to 7:15 a.m.

“It’s not a race, it’s a remembrance run of 2,071 steps, the same number the first responders climbed in New York up the 110 stories of the World Trade Center,” the event’s description reads.

At noon of the same day, patriots will congregate at the National Veterans Shrine at the American Village to honor the lives lost 24 years ago.

“Together, we will share a quiet moment of silence, hear a few words of reflection, and then experience the ceremonial ringing of the bell as a symbol of remembrance and unity,” the event’s description reads.

For the first time, the City of Opelika is partnering with the East Alabama Regional Training Association to host the Tunnel to Towers 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit from September 11–16.

The exhibit will be displayed at 301 Lake Condy Road and will include Ground Zero artifacts like World Trade Center steel and pieces of the building’s aluminum facade.

“The exhibit features videos, 9/11 dispatch audio, and a tribute to the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11, and those who have lost their lives since due to 9/11-related illnesses,” its description reads.

“Tours of the exhibit are conducted by retired New York City Firefighters and first responders who responded to Ground Zero. These witnesses to history share their experiences and memories of what they saw on 9/11 and the days and weeks that followed.

“In addition to the mobile exhibit, a memorial will be set up along the Southern Union walking track honoring the 343 FDNY firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11.”

The event will be open to the public from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on September 11th, September 13th, and September 14th and open from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on September 15th and September 16th.
