U.S. Senators Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) and Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) lauded President Donald Trump for implementing new tariffs on imports of cabinets and various related furniture.
The Trump administration announced a 50% tariff on imported kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, as well as a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture. The new duties will go into effect October 1st.
Britt praised the announcement, blaming China for “dumping” these subsidized products and hurting America companies in the process.
“Countries like China have spent years illegally dumping subsidized kitchen cabinets into the U.S., devastating longstanding American businesses,” Britt said on X. “I led a letter earlier this year asking for President Trump and Secretary Lutnick to put an end to this. I’m grateful they’ve taken action.”
The senator led a letter to the Commerce Secretary on this issue back in May, warning the administration about how the imports were harming Alabama’s economy.
“With this flood of imports coming into our country from China, Vietnam, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, and others, thousands of tremendous American cabinet manufacturing jobs have been lost with companies forced to shutter their factories,” the letter said.
“There is more than sufficient production capacity to manufacture cabinets in the U.S. Many manufacturers are currently operating at 30-70% capacity,” the letter continued. “Upon sufficient enforcement, our domestic manufacturers are ready and prepared to implement President Trump’s agenda and ramp up U.S. production.”
Tuberville, who is also a candidate for Alabama Governor in 2026, also thanked Trump for “taking action.”
“Foreign nations like Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia cannot keep flooding our markets with cheap, poorly made products,” Tuberville said. “Thankfully, President Trump is taking action. We must level the playing field and protect our domestic kitchen cabinet and furniture producers.”
