Alabama’s back-to-school sales tax holiday is July 20-22

For thirteen years, the beloved “tax-free weekend” has allowed Alabama shoppers to purchase school-related products and clothing without having to pay the state’s four percent sales tax.

Many cities and counties also participate in waiving their sales taxes, making the products altogether tax-free.

There are some limitations, however:

  • Clothing priced at $100 or less per article
  • School supplies valued at $50 or less per item
  • Books costing $30 or less per book
  • Tablets, laptops, computers and printers with a selling price of $750 or less

Tax-free weekend began in 2006 by act of the state legislature. Until 2017, the holiday was designated for the first weekend of August. Last year, the legislature changed the designated weekend to the third weekend of July.
