On Saturday night in Bryant-Denny Stadium, the Alabama Crimson Tide posted their largest shutout since 1951 during a dominating win over Louisiana-Monroe, beating the Warhawks by a staggering score of 73-0.
For the second game in a row, the offense’s star pass-catcher was wide receiver Germie Bernard, who seemed to be one of the only players to show up in the loss to Florida State. Bernard once again dazzled against ULM, scoring two first quarter touchdowns with an additional one wiped away by penalty.
The former Washington transfer has clearly established himself as the alpha in the wide receiver room and is by far the most advanced route runner on the team. He has also been open about his deep faith. On an appearance with The Next Round, Bernard said his goals on the field center around glorifying God.
“Most importantly, I’m always thanking my lord and savior. I have a great community behind me that’s always leading me back to Jesus whenever I’m going through tough times,” Bernard said when asked about being a steadying force on the team. “That helps me continue to lean into my faith a lot more because sometimes you can get distracted, and having a community behind you that’s always gonna keep you grounded in your foundation makes it a lot easier.
“God has a purpose for us, and we have to follow that. I know that my purpose is to impact as many people as I can with the platform that I have, and so that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m just trying to give glory to God because he blessed me to play this game of football.”
Through two games, Bernard has 11 catches for 213 yards and two touchdowns, and as the games start to get tougher for Alabama, him being at his best is going to be absolutely critical.
It certainly sounds like Bernard has a wonderful head on his shoulders and is the perfect person to be one of this team’s leaders.
