Mourners gathered Tuesday, March 31, at Visitation Catholic Church in Elmhurst, Illinois, to honor the life of University of Alabama student Jimmy Gracey, whose death during a spring break trip to Spain drew national attention.

Video of the service carried by WBRC FOX6 News shows the church was filled to capacity as family, friends, and community members attended the funeral mass.

Gracey’s casket, draped in a white cloth, rested at the front of the sanctuary as attendees received communion while “Amazing Grace” was sung.

During the service, a priest reminded mourners of the role of faith in grief, saying, “Christ is most present in our darkest times.”

Gracey’s godmother, Beth O’Reilly, delivered a heartfelt eulogy reflecting on his life, family, and faith.

“Jimmy took the role as big brother very seriously,” O’Reilly said. “He loved each of his siblings and had a unique relationship with each of them.”

She also spoke about the deep ties Gracey built during his time at The University of Alabama, where he was active in the Catholic community and formed close friendships.

“But as I reflect, I can’t help but think God was preparing us for this day,” O’Reilly said.

O’Reilly recalled a recent trip to Tuscaloosa, describing how the family came to better understand why Gracey was so happy at Alabama.

“God knew we would treasure that crazy crowded weekend where we had a chance to see Jimmy’s life there and why he was so happy in Tuscaloosa,” she said.

Gracey, a 20-year-old student at The University of Alabama, died earlier this month while studying abroad in Barcelona.

According to prior reporting from Yellowhammer News, Gracey disappeared after a night out in the city before his body was later recovered near a marina. Authorities ultimately determined his death was accidental after reviewing surveillance footage and autopsy findings.

The University of Alabama community previously honored Gracey with memorial services and a fraternity vigil, reflecting the impact he made on campus.

Pallbearers carried Gracey’s casket out of the church as the funeral concluded, where he is expected to be laid to rest.
