Alabama SSI recipients to receive two payments in May, August, October, and December

A portion of Alabamians who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will see two payments arrive in their accounts during four months of 2025, thanks to calendar quirks related to weekends and federal holidays.

According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), SSI payments are normally issued on the first day of each month. However, when the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday, payments are made on the last business day of the previous month. The shift ensures that recipients are not financially disadvantaged by delays, but it also results in two payments being delivered during the same month.

The SSI recipients will receive payments in:

  • May: May 1 and May 30

  • August: August 1 and August 29

  • October: October 1 and October 31

  • December: December 1 and December 31

The May 30 payment occurs because June 1 falls on a Sunday. Similarly, the second August, October, and December payments are advanced to avoid the Labor Day holiday, the Saturday start to November, and the New Year’s Day holiday, respectively.

It is important for recipients to know that these double-payment months do not represent extra money or bonus checks. As the SSA explains, the second payment is simply the following month’s benefit issued early. For example, after receiving two payments in May, recipients will not receive an SSI payment in June.

Regular Social Security retirement benefits are paid on a different schedule based on the recipient’s birth date. Those who receive both Social Security and SSI typically receive their Social Security payment on the 3rd of the month and their SSI payment on the 1st.

The SSA maintains a full schedule of benefit payments for both the current and upcoming calendar years.
