MONTGOMERY, Ala. — After un-endorsing him in the general election, Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL2) says she is ready and eager to work with President-Elect Donald J. Trump (R). At a meeting for the Montgomery Rotary Club today, Roby emphasized that the campaign is now behind her, and she wants to help the next president in any way she can.
“I said my peace about Mr. Trump during the campaign,” she said. “Mr. Trump is now the president-elect of the United States. And I’ve made it very clear that I am not only excited about working with him and his administration but I’m eager to do so. It is very important to work with the Trump Administration on behalf of the people that I represent here in Alabama and I’m eager to get to do that.”
Roby backed away from the Republican nominee in October, when the Trump campaign came under siege for a 2005 video clip of him making vulgar comments about his treatment of women. Since the tape’s release, Trump issued a public apology, but refused to drop out and ultimately defeated Hillary Clinton.
“Hillary Clinton must not be president, but with Trump leading the ticket, she will be,” Roby said in a statement at the time. “It is now clear Donald Trump is not fit to be President of the United States and cannot defeat Hillary Clinton. I believe he should step aside and allow Governor Pence to lead the Republican ticket.” Later, Roby’s team confirmed the congresswoman’s intent to write-in Gov. Mike Pence (R-IN) for president on election day.
Roby won reelection in Alabama’s Second Congressional District for the third time. She defeated Democrat Nathan Mathis and secured 54.6 percent of the vote.
