According to a press release from Governor Kay Ivey’s office, the Alabama National Guard has been authorized to assist with hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico. Ivey authorized Major General Sheryl Gordon to dispatch an RC-26 aircraft and five crew members to the island to help with recovery.

The unique airborne reconnaissance aircraft will be able to effectively assist Puerto Rican emergency personnel and other National Guard units on the island. The RC-26 is known for its ability to remain over affected areas for extended periods of time. These aircraft have been critical in surveying wildfires, oil spills, and hurricane damage. Its crew will provide aerial imagery of the areas impacted by Hurricane Maria.

“Alabamians are a kind and caring people – we are committed to helping those in need,” Governor Ivey said. “We are proud to offer the Alabama National Guard to assist with recovery efforts in Puerto Rico, and we continue to keep the people of Puerto Rico in our thoughts and prayers.”
