The Alabama Legislature recognized a Wiregrass law enforcement officer this week for his actions during a 2025 mall shooting, awarding the state’s highest honor for police service during a joint session at the Statehouse.

Lt. Robert Hopkins of the Houston County Sheriff’s Department was named the 2026 recipient of the Legislative Medal of Honor for Law Enforcement Officers, an annual recognition presented to officers who demonstrate exceptional courage and service.

Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter shared his thoughts on the presentation on social media stating, “It was an honor to present Lt. Robert Hopkins of the Houston County Sheriff’s Office with the Legislative Medal of Honor in recognition of his actions during a recent active shooter situation in Dothan. Alabama is proud to support Lt. Hopkins and every other law enforcement officer working to protect our state.”

Hopkins was nominated for the award by Houston County Sheriff Donald J. Valenza and was commended by lawmakers for “extraordinary courage, professionalism, and dedication to public service.”

The honor stems from Hopkins’ response to a shooting on October 12, 2025, at the Dothan Mall, where he was working an off-duty security detail.

According to the legislative resolution, Hopkins heard gunshots coming from the entrance of Dillard’s and, upon exiting the store, observed a man who had been shot lying near a barbershop entrance. Bystanders told him the suspect had fled inside the barbershop.

After relaying information and his location to dispatch, Hopkins pulled the injured man away from the entrance. With help from a U.S. Army veteran, whom he directed to retrieve a first aid bag from his patrol car, Hopkins began rendering aid.

When a Dothan police officer arrived, Hopkins provided cover at the barbershop entrance while the officer moved the victim to safety. Additional officers soon arrived, and Hopkins joined them in clearing the barbershop and ensuring the safety of those inside.

Lawmakers said Hopkins’ actions demonstrated “exceptional bravery and selflessness” and reflected “the core values of courage, honor, and sacrifice.”

“Despite significant personal risk, he acted decisively to protect the lives and safeties of others, exemplifying the very highest standards of law enforcement service,” the resolution states.

In addition to the mall incident, the Legislature noted Hopkins’ broader record of service with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, citing the respect he has earned from peers, supervisors, and the community.

The resolution further states that Hopkins is being recognized for his “integrity, compassion, and commitment to duty,” adding that those qualities reflect credit not only upon him but upon the entire law enforcement profession.

The honor will be entered into the official legislative record as a lasting tribute to Hopkins’ leadership and impact on Houston County residents.

Following the presentation, Hopkins addressed lawmakers and attendees, expressing appreciation for the recognition and support.

“I just want to say it’s an honor. To be in the same rank as the previous and future recipients of this award. It does mean a lot, and thank you for that,” Hopkins said.

“I also want to say thank you to each and every single one of you. For your support to us and the community that we provide for. Y’all do a great job here. King of the fight. Thank you all for everything that you do and your diligent work here. Thank you.”
