Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl believes that every Alabamian, including Democrats, should be honored that President Donald Trump is giving a commencement address in the Yellowhammer State this week.
Trump is scheduled to address at the University of Alabama’s spring commencement ceremony this evening.
Some Democrat leaders in the state and at the University of Alabama have condemned the school’s decision to allow Trump to speak at the event. They are also planning an opposing event on the same day.

Chairman Wahl criticized the response by those Democrats and liberal activist groups.
“It is unfortunate that some Democrats and liberal activist groups are attempting to turn a proud moment for Alabama into yet another political fight,” Wahl said. “Donald Trump is the sitting President of the United States and our Commander in Chief. Whether you support him politically or not, this visit is an incredible honor for our state, the University of Alabama, and every student on campus.”
Wahl said all students, no matter their political party, should celebrate what will be a “historic” event.
“How many graduates get to say the President of the United States spoke at their commencement? This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. These students have worked hard to earn their degrees, and now they get to witness history. That should be something everyone—regardless of party—can appreciate. This isn’t about politics. This is about a president who values the next generation and wants to speak directly to students entering the next chapter of life. President Trump is showing a genuine commitment to engaging with young Americans, and that deserves respect.”

The University of Alabama College Democrats are hosting a “Tide Against Trump” protest in Tuscaloosa. Beto O’Rourke, a Democratic former congressman who ran for governor and U.S. Senator in Texas, will be the keynote speaker.
“Free speech and open dialogue are fundamental to higher education and the values America was founded on. If we can’t welcome the sitting president to speak to graduates without triggering outrage, then we have a serious problem in this country,” Wahl continued. “I encourage every student—especially those who disagree—to come, listen, and be part of this moment. You don’t have to agree with every word to understand the value of hearing different perspectives.”
Wahl urged all University of Alabama graduates to attend and take pride in the national attention this brings to the state and the university.

“At this point, President Trump represents every single American. It doesn’t matter your background or political affiliation—this is about honoring the office and recognizing a major moment in our state’s history,” he said. “Whether you agree or disagree with him, we should be thankful to host the President of the United States right here in Alabama. This is a great opportunity for students and the entire university,” Wahl concluded.
“Alabama is once again in the national spotlight for something historic—and that’s something to celebrate, not protest.”
