Alabama Forestry Association endorses State Treasurer Young Boozer’s bid for third term

The Alabama Forestry Association (AFA) on Wednesday announced its endorsement of State Treasurer Young Boozer’s candidacy to seek the Republican nomination for a third term in office.

Boozer was appointed to his post by Gov. Kay Ivey earlier this year to fill the remainder of former State Treasurer John McMillan’s term, who left the position to become executive director of the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission.

Boozer formerly served two full terms as state treasurer from 2010 to 2018. The state treasurer’s office is tasked with depositing and investing all state funds and bond management.

Upon retiring from the banking industry, Boozer entered his career in public service as deputy state finance director under the administration of former Gov. Bob Riley. In his former role, Boozer was charged with restructuring the state’s bond debt and derivatives.

Boozer, a Montgomery resident, was born in Birmingham and raised in Tuscaloosa. He earned an economics degree from Stanford University and went on to obtain a master’s degree in finance from the University of Pennsylvania.

AFA president and CEO Chris Isaacson asserted that the taxpayers had benefited from Boozer’s approach to overseeing the state’s finances.

“One of AFA’s top priorities is making sure Alabama is managed in a fiscally responsible manner, and Young does a great job of making sure our state’s funds are managed wisely,” declared Isaacson. “His office manages the Alabama Trust Fund (ATF), one of the best initiatives ever adopted in Alabama to preserve the revenue from oil and gas royalties for future generations. In this role, he was instrumental in implementing changes to the structure and management of investments of the ATF, which enhanced its ability to provide a continuing stable source of funding. We support him in his bid for Treasurer”.

Boozer expressed that he was “gratified and incredibly honored” that AFA had endorsed his candidacy.

“This first-class organization and I are of like minds when it comes to fiscal responsibility,” stated Boozer. “The Treasurer’s Office is one that I know well and of which I am passionate. I feel that my unique skills and experience are perfect for the job.”

The primary election will take place on May 24, 2022.
