The Alabama Forestry Association (AFA) announced today that it has endorsed attorney, businessman and Republican activist Derek Chen in the race for Alabama State Auditor.
Today’s announcement throws the weight of the state’s forestry community, responsible for a $36 billion economic impact on Alabama’s economy, behind Chen in what is currently a two-man race.
“The Alabama Forestry Association’s commitment to stewardship is what responsible leadership looks like,” Chen said. “As one of Alabama’s largest industries, I’m honored to have its endorsement for State Auditor and will always work to support the hardworking men and women in the forestry industry.”

“As a long-time member of AFA, we have seen Derek’s conservative values in action,” said Chris Isaacson, AFA President and CEO. “Those conservative values and his commitment to serve make him the right person for the job and we look forward to working with Derek as State Auditor.”

According to AFA, Chen earned his bachelor’s degree from Hope College in Michigan. He went on to earn his juris doctorate from Cumberland School of Law and his master’s in business administration from the University o Alabama. Chen practiced law in Jefferson County before announcing his run for State Auditor.
Chen is a first-generation United States citizen who grew up in California before moving to Alabama to attend law school and eventually settling in Vestavia Hills.
As the son of Taiwanese parents who legally immigrated to the US to escape the ever-present threat from communist China, Chen has a deep appreciation for the fundamental rights provided by the US Constitution and the importance of fighting to protect those rights in the face of an ever-expanding federal government.
