One of America’s largest egg producers donated 280,800 eggs to help feed Alabama’s least fortunate citizens last week.
The donation was made by Cal-Maine foods, founded and headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, a company that by some measures accounts for a quarter of all egg consumption in the United States.
Cal-Maine operates a facility in the Baldwin County town of Robertsdale, from which the massive donation will be shipped.
The Alabama Department of Agriculture and the Alabama Trucking Association partnered with Cal-Maine to make the donation possible.
This donation will improve the lives of many Alabamians struggling during the pandemic,” said Agriculture & Industries Commissioner Rick Pate in a release.
“[T]o have the Alabama Trucking Association quickly agree to provide transportation for the delivery was gratifying,” Pate added as thanks.
“Alabama truckers have huge hearts,” Alabama Trucking Association CEO Mark Colson told the press before continuing, “they care for their families, friends and neighbors who have been directly affected by this pandemic.”
“The generosity of the Cal-Maine donation will supply all of Alabama’s Feeding America member network food banks and their Partner Distribution Organizations with pallets of fresh, nutritious eggs to combat Alabama food insecurity and hunger, which has seen an exponential growth due to COVID-19,” said Rich Deem, CEO of Montgomery Area Food Bank said in a statement.
“Families attempting to stretch their food budgets will appreciate the versatility eggs bring to the table,” Deem added.
