(Video Above: Congressman Bradley Byrne speaks in support of the Defund Planned Parenthood Act)
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Congressman Bradley Byrne (R-AL) and Congresswoman Martha Roby (R-AL2) called on the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday to approve legislation eliminating all federal funding to Planned Parenthood.
In his speech, Byrne referenced the Planned Parenthood clinic in Mobile, Alabama that failed to properly report the possible sexual abuse of a 14 year old girl who had received two abortions in a four month time period.
The profundity of this incident has only been multiplied by the recent videos released of Planned Parenthood casually discussing the sale of baby body parts.
“By now we have all seen the appalling videos which depict Planned Parenthood officials talking about how they ‘crush’ babies in certain ways to preserve certain organs and then bargaining over the price of the organs,” said Byrne. “I want to be crystal clear: the loss of any human life is a tragedy, but the casual nature in which the Planned Parenthood officials talk about killing a baby is simply heartbreaking and appalling. It is unconscionable that any American could be that cold and callous.”
Rep. Roby added, in her address on the House floor, that she dismisses the argument from the left that banning funding to Planned Parenthood is an attack funding women’s health
“They pretend that abortion doesn’t exist and that Planned Parenthood is the only place where low-income women can get health care,” Roby said.
“That’s untrue, and anybody spreading that ought to be ashamed. There are more than 13,000 Federal Qualified and Rural Health Centers throughout this country offering low-cost health care to women. They outnumber Planned Parenthood clinics 20-1.”
In response to the recently renewed controversy, the House will vote on H.R. 3134, the Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2015, which is cosponsored by every Republican member of Alabama’s delegation, removing Title X federal funding from Planned Parenthood and other family planning centers that provide abortions.
“Congress cannot simply sit on the sidelines and wait for someone else to respond. These egregious actions require a response,” said Byrne.
The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on the Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2015 on Friday Sept. 18.
