Alabama cancels home and home with West Virginia in wake of SEC schedule decision

One of the biggest changes in college football over the last five or so years has been conference re-alignment and what they have done to team schedules as a result.

An SEC that was already the toughest conference in college football added two more powers in Texas and Oklahoma, making schedules within the league somehow even tougher. Last week, it was revealed that the SEC is preparing next season to move from an eight conference game model to nine in order to satisfy the rest of the sport and College Football Playoff committee.

Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne came out shortly after that decision was announced and said Alabama will be looking at their future non-conference schedule and evaluating it as the SEC gauntlet has greatly de-incentivized the need to play premiere programs out of conference.

That evaluation has already yielded results, and it was announced Tuesday that the Crimson Tide is cancelling its upcoming home and home two-year series with the West Virginia Mountaineers, slated to begin in 2026 and end in 2027.

“We are proud of the number of high-quality home-and-home non-conference games we have scheduled for the next 10 years,” Byrne said.

“That being said, we know that college athletics has been evolving and changing rapidly over the last few years, and it made sense for us to make these adjustments on our future schedules. We have a bit more flexibility as we transition to a nine-game format in the Southeastern Conference, and it gives us the opportunity to further evaluate how strength of schedule is evaluated for the College Football Playoff. Between other home-and-homes as well as conference games, we will continue to have a solid strength of schedule, which is good for our team, fans and college football.”

A caveat of the conference adding the extra game was every team having to play at least one Power Four team out of conference as well, and with Ohio State already on the docket for 2027 and a second game with Florida State in 2026, it did not make sense to keep West Virginia on the schedule.

Here are the currently scheduled non-conference Power Four games for Alabama for nearly the next decade, however they are subject to change at any given time:
