It was a good Saturday on the hardwood in the Yellowhammer State with both the No. 1 ranked Auburn Tigers and the No. 4 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide earning big victories.
Auburn continued to roll and will remain at No. 1 upon yet another blemish free week. Coming off last weekend’s huge victory over Alabama did not impact the Tigers’ focus, handling Arkansas 67-60 during the week and following it up with another home victory over the hated rival Georgia Bulldogs by a score of 82-70.
For as sensational as Johni Broome has been throughout the season, Saturday may have been his best game yet. The big man scored 31 points along with 14 rebounds with another four assists to help the Tigers get to 25-2 on the season and giving himself another argument in the National Player of the Year conversation.
Denver Jones had 17 points while Chad Baker-Mazara and Miles Kelly added 11 each.
The Tide on the other hand went to Missouri last week and suffered a loss, their second consecutive coming off the defeat to Auburn. Alabama did not let two turn into three however, earning a huge win over Kentucky in front of a white out Coleman Coliseum crowd by a score of 96-83 to stay two games behind the Tigers in the SEC title race and 22-5 on the year.
Mark Sears had another strong showing on offense with 30 points while Aden Holloway added 19 of his own along with 14 from Chris Youngblood.
Because of the loss during the week, Alabama will likely drop in the AP Poll which will be released on Monday afternoon.
Next up for Alabama is a home game against ranked Mississippi State before a trip to Knoxville for a showdown against the Tennessee Volunteers. Auburn on the other hand hosts Ole Miss before a road game in Lexington against Kentucky on Saturday.
