Sweet Home Revenge: Alabama battles back to dominate Vanderbilt in huge win

(Alabama Athletics)

The Alabama Crimson Tide earned another huge victory on Saturday afternoon in Tuscaloosa by a score of 30-14, this time, following up the win against Georgia much better than they did last year.

After a year of being ridiculed and poked fun at for losing against the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville this time last season, the Tide showed up focused and ready to go, battling back from an early deficit and cruising late with a wonderful second half performance.

An early fourth down interception from Ty Simpson — which was actually the offense’s first turnover of the season — allowed Vanderbilt to grab the ball and eventually the lead.

As the Commodores lurked in the red zone with a chance to go up 14-0, it was the defense to make the first huge play of the game by stripping the ball from Diego Pavia and getting it back to Simpson and the offense.

The Tide took that opportunity and ran with it as Simpson hit Ryan Williams in the end zone to tie things up early in the second quarter.

Pavia and Vanderbilt made it clear this would not be easy though, going up 14-7 late in the first half after he found running back Sedrick Alexander for a score.

Simpson countered with a massive drive that ended in a touchdown to Germie Bernard to send things to the break all square at 14.

In the second half, Vanderbilt would not score another point, allowing Alabama to slowly chisel away at the Commodores with two third quarter field goals. The play of the day came early in the fourth when while trailing 20-14 with a chance to take the lead in the red zone, Pavia was intercepted by Keon Sabb to preserve the lead.

On a third and one later for Alabama who was trying to separate things into two scores, the big left tackle Kadyn Proctor got the ball in his hands once again after his huge catch last week, bullying his way forward for a first down.

After stopping Vanderbilt following another field goal to make in a 9-point game, Jam Miller found his way into the end zone late to officially make it a minor blowout.

Miller finished the game with 136 yards on 22 carries, while Simpson rebounded from his first interception to have another huge day and finish 23 of 31 for 340 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan Williams was the leading receiver with 98 yards on six catches while Bernard added 82 yards on five catches.

Up next for Alabama is another challenging road trip next week up to Missouri for an 11:00 a.m. game that they simply have to be ready to go. For today though, the Tide can enjoy another victory.
