The Alabama Crimson Tide is hardly the only example of a home team pulling off a big upset and having their fans run onto either the football field or the basketball court.
But it’s a topic that has gained momentum over the last couple of years.
With several incidents involving Alabama’s football program — who has had the field stormed on them for every road loss in recent memory — the Tide just so happen to be at the forefront of the conversation.
This past week, the court storming topic came back up when the Clemson Tigers defeated the Duke Blue Devils and Clemson fans swarmed the court immediately, creating exactly the kind of dangerous situation for players and staff that naysayers of the timeless practice talk about.
With the topic coming up once again, Alabama Athletics Director Greg Byrne offered a crazy idea to curb stormings from happening.
“I think from a safety standpoint, keeping people off the fields and courts is a good thing for everybody involved,” Byrne said via ESPN. “If we said that the home team, if they storm the field or the court, they’re going to lose the game right then and there, that will stop it.”

He went on to acknowledge how unpopular an idea like that would be and he’s open to other solutions but doesn’t see any way to stop it.
“I’m not overly optimistic and understand it’s not a popular opinion in a lot of people’s view,” Byrne said. “I’ll get criticized for it, and that’s okay. I do believe in it. If somebody can come up with something that’s a better idea that does not include that, I’m all for it….I’m not saying that’s the only possible way. I’m convinced, in my own simple mind, that that would be something that would stop it.”
Byrne even said he would be for a situation where the opposing team is given a couple of minutes to clear the playing surface before fans are allowed on, but while he’s not wrong, ultimately this defeats what makes a storming special and part of what makes college athletics both unique and so loved.
It’s unlikely any sort of situation like this would ever be implemented, but Byrne is likely correct in asserting for as unpopular as this would be, it would fix the problem.
