Mike Cason, the longtime state government reporter for AL.com and a fixture of the Alabama State House press corps for more than a decade, has retired.
Cason has been one of the most familiar faces covering Alabama government and politics in Montgomery, reporting from the State House on the Legislature, elections, policy, and high profile trials.
Before taking over the State House beat for Alabama Media Group, Cason worked as both a reporter and editor at The Montgomery Advertiser and later served as an assistant metro editor at The Birmingham News.
He studied at the University of Alabama and Auburn University at Montgomery.
Over the course of his career, Cason covered Alabama journalism through a period of extraordinary change, from the era of dominant daily newspapers to an increasingly digital news industry.
Cason leaves a company that no longer prints a newspaper.
The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times and the Mobile Press-Register published their final print editions on in 2023, after almost 135 years for the News, leaving AL.com as Alabama Media Group’s only news outlet.
