Alabama’s second-highest elected official was honored last week at a surprise reception as his final legislative session in office nears its conclusion.
Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth (R-Guntersville) was recognized during a surprise reception organized by his family, House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, and Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger ahead of what is expected to be his final days presiding over the Alabama Senate.
“Yesterday was a day I will always remember and appreciate,” Ainsworth said in a social media post reflecting on the event.
Unless a special session is called, Ainsworth noted that Thursday will mark his last day serving as presiding officer of the Senate, closing out a 12-year run in Montgomery that included service in both the Alabama House and as lieutenant governor.
Speakers at the reception included Gudger, Ledbetter, and Ainsworth’s chief of staff, Connie Rowe. Ainsworth described the event as “both a humbling and memorable” experience.
Ainsworth used the moment to thank those who supported him throughout his time in office.
“I must offer thanks to my family for supporting me in the Alabama House and as lieutenant governor over the past 12 years and for all of the sacrifices they have made while I was in Montgomery,” he said.
“Thanks, too, must be given to the best staffers – both past and present – that anyone could ever hope to have.”
Reflecting on his time in leadership, Ainsworth pointed to a series of policy achievements he said helped position Alabama for long-term success.
“To all my Senate and House colleagues, it has been an amazing ride, and I am very proud of the fact that our efforts have positioned Alabama in the best shape it has ever been,” he said.
He highlighted efforts including making Alabama a leader in workforce development and industry recruitment, passing what he described as the largest tax cut in state history, advancing school choice legislation, and increasing funding and teacher pay for public education.
Ainsworth also emphasized continued focus during the remainder of his term.
“I was always taught in sports that you run through the tape, not to the tape, so I am looking forward to working hard over the next nine months of my term and finishing strong,” he said.
He closed by thanking Alabamians for the opportunity to serve.
“Thank you Alabama for the opportunity of a lifetime to serve you.”
