Additional relief available for January storm victims

FEMA has made additional disaster assistance available to the state of Alabama in the wake of last month’s severe weather.

The aid is to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes on Jan. 12.

It was also announced FEMA and the state opened a disaster recovery center Friday in Alexander City to provide one-on-one help.

President Joe Biden authorized the federal cost-share for debris removal and emergency protective measures to be increased to 100% of the total eligible costs for a 30-day period of the state’s choosing within the first 120 days of the incident period, the White House said.

The increase is in response to a letter submitted by Sen. Katie Britt, Rep. Terri Sewell, and the entire Alabama delegation urging the president to increase the federal cost share for FEMA public assistance from 75% to 100%.

“These crucial funds will help Alabama families, small businesses, and communities rebuild and recover. I am grateful for the president’s continued support of an expedited and robust federal disaster response to assist our state’s people,” said Britt. “We are forever indebted to the incredible first responders, law enforcement officers, and volunteers who have devoted countless hours, as well as their talents and resources, to these valiant efforts.

“My office will remain actively engaged with local, state, and federal partners throughout the recovery process.”

The Alexander City center is at the Betty Carol Grant Technical Center, 1675 Cherokee Road. It is open Monday to Saturday, six days a week, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Other centers are in

  • Prattville – Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief Center, 118 Jesse Samuel Hunt Blvd.
  • Selma – Dr. Michael and Catherine Bullock Community Center, 1428 Broad St.; and Felix Heights Community Center, 405 Medical Center Pkwy.
  • Eutaw – Robert H. Young Community Center, 720 Greensboro St.
  • Emelle – Emelle City Hall, 123 Dailey Ave.

No appointment is necessary to visit a Disaster Recovery Center. The deadline to apply for assistance for all designated counties is March 16.
