ABC temporarily closing about one-third of their stores, taking other coronavirus precautions

The Alabama Beverage Control (ABC) board announced the temporary closure of 78 stores on Monday due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Citing staffing and health considerations, the ABC’s head of government relations, Dean Argo, said in a statement, “[W]e believe that closing some of our stores will provide the greatest amount of employee/customer protection, while ensuring maximum productivity and efficiency.”

Stores remaining in operation will have reduced hours, opening from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

No more than five customers at a time will be allowed in any store.

Employees at each location will retrieve requested items from the shelves, consumers will not be permitted to browse freely.

“Over the last week or so sales have been on the uptick,” Argo told Alabama Daily News.

The board’s website lists about 220 active locations, and the state employee database lists almost 900 ABC employees.

The Board is aiming to move staff from temporarily shuttered locations to stores still in operation.
