“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
This famous quote by Winston Churchill seems to describe one of Huntsville’s heroes, Mr. Harry Dickerson Dobbins, Jr. Mr. Dobbins passed away recently at the age of 88 after a life of public service.
For nearly five decades, Dobbins dedicated his whole being to the City of Huntsville and its citizens. His remarkable journey of service began in 1972 when he volunteered as a police officer for the Huntsville Police Department (HPD). Notably, during this time, he served without pay, motivated solely by his unwavering commitment to public safety. Alongside his voluntary role with HPD, he simultaneously worked for Oakwood University Police, reinforcing his dedication to keeping the community safe.

In September 1992, after two decades of selfless volunteer service, Dobbins was officially hired as a certified police officer with HPD. He began his tenure on the 3rd shift uniform patrol, where he remained until 1995. From 1995 until 2001, he served on the Traffic Task Force, including a role as a motorcycle officer. During this period, Dobbins also played a pivotal role in Fleet Services, developing processes and procedures that continue to benefit the department today.
Dobbins’ dedication did not go unnoticed. In 2001, the Mayor and City Council honored him as a Community Hero, recognizing his exceptional commitment to public service. Even after his medical retirement as a police officer in 2004, he continued his work as a civilian in Fleet Services, proving his resilience and determination to keep serving his city.
In 2009, his hard work was celebrated twice: first in March when he received the Administrative Services Bureau Employee of the Year Award, and again in October when he was named one of Huntsville’s 10 “Shining Stars,” with his inspiring story highlighted in the Mayor’s State of the City Address. Over his remarkable career, Dobbins also received numerous Meritorious Service Awards and countless letters of appreciation.
Mr. Dobbins’ life was one of unwavering dedication, kindness, and service. His positive impact will be remembered by the city he cherished and the countless lives he touched.
