This morning, Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl announced that he has been working alongside Alabama House leadership on a package of bills that would enact sweeping tax cuts to provide financial relief for Alabama families.
According to the state party, a legislative package of four bills will be introduced later today with their full backing.
The legislation reportedly targets immediate cuts to the state’s grocery tax, reducing taxes for seniors on fixed incomes, and increasing deductions for the state’s income tax.
The party reports that total savings for Alabama taxpayers would equal $191.6 million upon final passage.
“The Alabama Republican Party stands for lower taxes and fiscal responsibility, and we will continue to fight for hardworking Alabamians to have lower taxes,” Chairman Wahl said today.
“In these challenging times of rising inflation and increased costs, it’s critical that we take bold action to ensure Alabamians—especially families and retirees—receive the relief they need. Donald Trump is leading the line in Washington, and I want to see Alabama doing our part to provide citizens with needed tax relief right here at home.”
Since revenue-modifying measures must originate in the House of Representatives and not the State Senate, Chairman Wahl reports he’s been working closely with Alabama Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) and State Rep. Danny Garrett (R-Trussville), who oversees the state’s education trust fund, to craft the legislation.
“We appreciate Speaker Ledbetter and Rep. Garrett for their work towards legislation that prioritizes lower taxes. Their commitment to conservative principles and fiscal responsibility will make a real difference for Alabama families,” Wahl said.
One of the Alabama Republican Party’s long-standing priorities has been lowering the state’s sales tax on groceries. Republicans were successful in reducing the grocery tax by 1% in 2023, and the ALGOP wants to see an additional 1% cut passed this session. Additionally, the Party is advocating for legislation that allows local governments to reduce or eliminate their portion of the grocery tax, ensuring even greater savings at the checkout line for Alabama households.

Another critical focus for ALGOP is providing tax relief for seniors. They also note support for increasing the state’s tax exemption on withdrawals from retirement savings plans to alleviate financial pressures for those living on fixed incomes.
Additionally, Chairman Wahl reports that he’s advocating for an increase in the state’s standard deduction and dependent exemptions, which would reduce the income tax burden for Alabama families.
“These bills will continue the Republican Party’s record of lowering taxes in Alabama,” said Chairman Wahl.
“Since 2021, Republican leadership in the State Legislature has successfully passed approximately $1.4 billion in tax cuts. Our work isn’t done yet though— I believe we must continue putting Alabama taxpayers first and ensure that our seniors, families, and businesses get to keep more of their own hard-earned money.”
