First Female General Takes Over AL National Guard

Sheryl Gordon, Adjutant General, Alabama National Guard

Following the retirement of Major General Perry Smith, Governor Ivey has appointed Sheryl Gordon as Adjutant General of the Alabama National Guard. General Gordon will be the first female Adjutant General in the history of the Alabama National Guard.

Governor Ivey called General Gordon a “trailblazer and visionary leader” with “a distinguished military career spanning 33 years.” General Gordon became a 2nd Lieutenant in 1981. She was promoted to Brigadier General in 2009 and Major General in 2011. She currently serves as the civilian Executive Director of the National Guard Association.

“Being chosen to serve in this capacity is a great honor and is a responsibility I do not take lightly. However, I am confident my previous assignments have prepared me for this task.”

General Sheryl Gordon will take command beginning August 1st.
