Stewart cut his teeth in politics working for south Alabama congressman Sonny Callahan, R-Mobile. Callahan left office in 2003, at which point Stewart joined the administration of newly elected Alabama Gov. Bob Riley as Policy Director. He worked his way up to Senior Advisor to the Governor, a role in which he was responsible for the development and implementation of the governor’s policy initiatives as well as legislative affairs. In 2006, he was named Riley’s Chief of Staff.
As Riley’s top advisor, Stewart built relationships with people in every corner of state government. Those relationships still serve him well as he heads up the state governmental affairs operation for BABC. His client list includes industry heavyweights like Energen Corporation, Pfizer Inc. and Vulcan Materials Company. He also works closely with other major clients that fall under his firm’s umbrella.
Prior to his work in politics, Stewart helped launch a successful tech startup that was acquired by a large corporation.
With a wealth of experience in the private sector, D.C., and state government, he’s managed to keep from being pigeonholed as just a “Riley guy,” which can be a challenge for former senior level staffers in any administration.
