Did your Alabama Legislators accept or decline a pay raise this year?

The Alabama Legislature in 2007 — at the time controlled by Democrats — passed themselves a 62% pay raise, which also included automatic increases to their monthly expense allowance to coincide with any increase in the consumer price index.

The Republican-controlled Legislature in 2012 repealed the pay increase and tied legislative pay to median household income so it would increase or decrease based on how Alabamians are doing economically. Additionally, the automatic cost-of-living adjustments built into the Democrats’ pay raise were done away with.

Those changes go into effect next year, as the new legislative quadrennium begins. So legislators are set to receive one more pay increase this spring under the old system unless they specifically request to opt-out of the pay raise, which many of them have done over the last several years.

Lawmakers currently make roughly $57,000. Under the new system in which their pay is tied to median household income, their pay will drop down under $42,000.
