Secretary of State Merrill: National voting issues an ’embarrassment,’ There were no voter suppression issues in Alabama

(J. Merrill/Facebook)

Across the United States of America, ballots are still being counted. Election results are being finalized, recounted and in some instances, changed.

Politicians of both major political parties have called into question results in different states. President Donald Trump has called for the results in Florida to be certified from Election Day so Florida Governor Rick Scott can be declared the next Republican Senator from Florida and Rep. Ron Desantis to be named the next Governor. Failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton says that if the elections were “fair,” the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams, would be the governor-elect.

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill was asked about these issues on “The Dale Jackson Show,” and called them “an embarrassment.”

332

“I’ll tell you exactly what it is. It’s an embarrassment,” Merrill stated. “It’s an embarrassment to that individual community, it’s an embarrassment to that region of the state, it’s an embarrassment to that state and it’s an embarrassment to the nation as a whole.”

Merrill said he sees these continuing controversies causing people to question the legitimacy of elections.

“When they allow people to make up their own rules, make up their own laws and make up their own procedures and don’t follow the standards that are set aside, that’s a problem for everybody. It puts people in a position to lose confidence in the process. And whenever people begin to have their confidence erode in the process, then people quit participating because they don’t think when they cast their vote that their voice is going to be heard for the candidate of their choice. That’s a problem,” he warned.

As for Alabam’s issues, Merrill says they were overblown in the leadup to the election.

Partial transcript as follows:

JACKSON: You have voter issues across the state that I’m sure came up on Election Day. We’ve seen them come up in other states, as well. Anything of note happen in the state of Alabama that we should know about?

MERRILL: No, sir.

JACKSON: None?

MERRILL: No, sir.

In 2000, the Bush/Gore situation cause half the country to believe the election was stolen. The 2016 Russian collusion story has been going on for over two years later with no end in sight. And now in 2018, we have a slow rolling blue wave that appears to have changed at least two Senate results and numerous House seats from the announced results on Election Night. Rightly, or wrongly, this does not cause people to trust the results.

If we all lose faith in our elections, there could be serious consequences in the future.

Doug Jones had nothing to do with bringing the Toyota-Mazda plant to Alabama

Sen.-elect Doug Jones appears on CBS Sunday Morning, Dec. 17, 2017 (CBS News/Twitter)

The cowardly caretaker junior senator from the great state of Alabama in an ill-fitting suit is at it again. Doug Jones is dishonestly taking credit for bringing a $1.6 billion dollar investment and thousands of jobs to North Alabama.

He claimed last week at a Democratic campaign rally, “Clearly if you get down to the bottom of it, that plant would not have come to Alabama with Roy Moore sitting as United States senator.”

The problem? He’s lying.

Sam Givhan, Madison County GOP chairman and candidate for state senate district 7, said on WVNN radio’s “The Dale Jackson Show” that this is just not true.

303

Partial transcript as follows:

GIVHAN: Well, first of all, there were two politicians in the room when we were negotiating: Tommy Battle and me. And I wasn’t there because I was a politician. I was there because I was paid to work for the city of Huntsville and there are a lot of people out there — I kind of get amused from all these advertisements going on about I did this or posturing here and there so and so did that. You know, Tommy Battle is the reason we get this work that we have. He has got a team together and we work together well. Industry can trust us and we were working on this way before anybody thought Doug Jones was gonna win this thing.

JACKSON: Weren’t you working on this before this race even took place?

GIVHAN: The background of this goes back to before … Bentley was governor.

When asked if the Japanese businessmen who run Toyota and Mazda made an issue of Roy Moore’s election, Givhan made it clear they were not worried about the state’s Federal leadership.

Partial transcript as follows:

JACKSON: Would they fear Roy Moore getting elected?

GIVHAN: I don’t know what the Japanes were thinking about that. We weren’t discussing local or statewide elections. We were discussing incentives.

JACKSON: Did Roy Moore come up at all? Did any guy come up to you and say, “Hey, what’s up with this Roy Moore guy?”

GIVHAN: No.

Jones can, if he wants, pretend that new investment to Alabama is because of him. He can, and will, run ads in 2020 taking credit for Alabama’s booming economy, which will be a nice switch for Alabama Democrats.

Mo Brooks applauds President Trump for trying to end birthright citizenship

(AL Legislature)

President Donald Trump has tossed out his own personal “October Surprise” in the form of an idea to reign in birthright citizenship for the children of illegal aliens. The caravan, which media outlets are now declaring “doesn’t exist,” is still slowly plodding its way towards the United States’ border.

Illegal immigration is the number one Trump issue tracking all the way back to the day he descended down the escalator in 2015. This is obviously a political play to the Trump base and something that is being used to turn out Republican voters, but that does not mean that it is an idea without merit. The United States is one of 33 countries that currently offer citizenship this way and Canada is the only other developing nation that allows such a thing.

Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-Huntsville) told WVNN radio this morning that he believes the move by the president is one that is not only necessary, but also that the president should be lauded for taking the step.

290

“I applaud President Trump for expressing a willingness to try to do something about this huge border security problem that we have,” Brooks stated on “The Dale Jackson Show.” “Again, one of the pieces of candy that’s out there that the illegal aliens grab for is the birthright citizenship and then the years and years and years of welfare benefits that the parents of those illegal alien children get.”

Brooks also said he believes this is a sovereignty and security issue.

He explained, “We should be using as many military personnel as are necessary to secure our borders. If you do not have border security you are not a sovereign nation, and so defending borders is the number one goal of the U.S. military because that’s defending the homeland. But let me kind of put this caravan into perspective. On a weekly basis last year you had about this number of people coming into the United States of America illegally. Roughly 10,000 per week came in illegally in ones and twos and fives and tens and fifties and whatever — not all in mass as this caravan is. Where they’re really thumbing their nose at the sovereign to the United States and the laws of America.”

The debate on this issue will rage for days. Is it even possible for the president to do this? Does an 1898 ruling have applicability in 2018? Will the newly conservative Supreme Court decide this?

The answers will not be decided before next Tuesday, but all the players will attempt to use this talk as a political weapon.

Former Sheriff David Clarke slams Randall Woodfin for not recognizing federal laws in Birmingham sanctuary city debate

(G. Skidmore/Flickr)

Former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke appeared this week on “The Ford Faction” to discuss protecting George H. W. Bush on the tragic day of 9/11.

He goes on to discuss Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin calling Birmingham a “welcoming city” that will not work with ICE.

Clarke explains that according to federal law, it is illegal to not enforce federal immigration laws. He says mayors and politicians are subject to federal prison when they don’t enforce federal laws in place.

The frequent Fox News Channel guest tells host Ford Brown that he wonders why mayors are not being charged by the US Attorney’s Office for not enforcing federal laws.

Clarke predicts that the only way to reverse the trend is to make sure the voters turn out to vote.

In conclusion, the former sheriff gives a quick “Roll Tide.”

Alabama’s new $25 million investment fund for start-up companies

(M. Hottle/Facebook)

Matt Hottle joined “The Ford Faction” Thursday from Birmingham, and works for the Alabama Futures Fund (AFF).

AFF has closed a $25 million early-stage venture capital fund, launching the largest seed-stage investment fund in Alabama history.

According to Hottle, AFF will focus its investments in companies across a broad range of industries that exhibit the potential for high growth. AFF is focused on developing a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in Alabama and will only invest in companies that are headquartered in, or willing to relocate to, the state of Alabama.

The fund was conceived to address Alabama’s historically low ranking in funding for early-stage startups. AFF will add meaningful capital to the burgeoning Alabama startup ecosystem while helping to close the funding gap that has hindered startup activity and economic growth in Alabama.

Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale lays out his two-part plan to ensure safety in Jefferson County schools (AUDIO)

(M. Hale/Facebook)

Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale joined Ford in studio Wednesday and laid out his plan to ensure safety in Jefferson County Schools.

Hale said he wants to see the safest county schools in the nation in Alabama.

His plans include placing a School Resource Deputy (SRO) in every Jefferson County school – elementary, middle and high – and forming an assessment team within the School Resource Division to identify students who exhibit specific behavioral patterns that may indicate a need for assistance.

87

Mike Hale said, “Tactical response in schools is different. You have children, you need the proper ammunition, you have to have the proper tacticle plan and our plan not only put a deputy sheriff in every school but it says we think that important in Jefferson County.”

He added, “The mental health component is a big component of the success.”

Jefferson County Schools will set the precedent for leading the nation in school safety.

Alabama Power works to keep the electricity running through any storm (AUDIO)

(Alabama Power/Facebook)

Michael Sznajderman, spokesman for Alabama Power called in today to explain the preparation that goes into hurricane season for Alabama Power.

It is no small ordeal as they were ready to go with sister companies such as Georgia Power and Mississippi Power ready to help out and in turn do the same for them.

He stated that thought it was not a large storm, “48,000 customers across the state were affected” out of the 1.4 million customers they serve in Alabama.

109

“At the peak of the storm, there were 25,000 without power, however, now that number is down to 7,800 now without power,” said Sznajderman.

Alabama Power has been chipping away at those numbers since first light today and will continue to work.

Host Ford Brown went on to ask when does the company turn their attention away from the hurricanes and onto other potential storms around the state, which Sznajderman replied, “We are always watching out for the state no matter what is going on at our state, but November we switch to tornadoes and snowstorms.”
