It appears that Alabama may be well on its way to having its first husband and wife team in the Alabama legislature.
Susan Hightower, wife of State Sen. Bill Hightower, came in first place in the 5-way Republican primary to fill the House District 104 seat vacated by former State Rep. Jim Barton.
Margie Wilcox also had a strong showing, receiving 31.7 percent of the vote to Hightower’s 42.4 percent.
The complete results are as follows:
Susan Hightower: 42.4
Margie Wilcox: 31.7
Nathan Davis: 22.2
Charlie Plyler: 2.6
Ralph Carmichael 1.0
Only 3,530 people voted in the special primary election. The runoff is set for Dec. 3 and will undoubtedly be another low-turnout affair.
Hightower and Wilcox spent roughly $40,000 each in the primary, far outclassing their opponents. But their campaigns’ grassroots efforts will be the key in a runoff that could very well only see a couple thousand people make it to the polls.
Regardless of who wins, the Alabama legislature will have another Republican woman joining their ranks.
