Former Republican state senator Steve French is looking to return to the legislature, and is making legislative immunity and cleaning up corruption two of his key campaign issues.
Those two issues and a “no new taxes” pledge are the three points French touches on in a new television ad that’s set to go up on Birmingham-area cable television beginning Monday.
French served in the Alabama senate from 1998-2009, before being defeated in the Republican primary by current Sen. Slade Blackwell, R-Mountain Brook.
French and two other Republicans are running for the House District 46 seat being vacated by Rep. Paul DeMarco. DeMarco announced in late October that he is running for Alabama’s 6th Congressional District seat.
French’s ad can be seen above and here’s the transcript:
Steve French:
Hi, my name is Steve French, and as we begin 2014 and everyone makes their resolution, let me tell you about a few of mine. I think it’s wrong when Congress exempts itself from the ObamaCare law, just like I think it’s wrong when Montgomery legislators exempt themselves from the traffic laws. That’s why I’m going to end the legislative immunity enjoyed in Montgomery. They ought to be treated just like us. I’m against new taxes, and I signed a no new tax pledge. I think we have enough money coming into Montgomery. We need to manage it better. I have a zero tolerance against corruption. I’ve turned in crooked politicians in the past, and I’ll do it again. We need more honesty in government.
