WASHINGTON — Alabama’s senior Senator Richard Shelby (R) completed his yearly circuit of all the state’s counties again this year, marking his 1,943rd visit this week.

Today marked the 1,943rd county visit of my career as I completed my annual statewide tour of Alabama’s 67 counties….

“Throughout my time in the Senate, it has been one of my top priorities to visit each of Alabama’s 67 counties every year,” Sen. Shelby told Yellowhammer Tuesday afternoon. “I have always believed that elected officials should be accountable to the people they represent. To do this effectively, they can’t only come to down during an election year, but rather they should regularly be accessible to talk about the issues that are impacting their constituents. These county visits are the best way I know to stay in close touch with the people who sent me to Washington and the best way for them to keep in touch with me.”

Shelby was first elected to the Senate in 1986 and prior to that served for 8 years in the U.S. House. With roughly four decades of experience under his belt and thanks to the newly elected Republican majority in the Senate, Shelby now chairs the Senate Banking Committee, one of the most powerful posts in the body.

He is running for a sixth term in the Senate in 2016.
