SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. — Alabama State Sen. Cam Ward (R-Alabaster) has been arrested for driving under the influence, according to multiple reports.

The Shelby County Sheriffs office says he remains in custody after being arrested early Wednesday afternoon.

“Senator Ward made a mistake,” Senate Majority Leader Greg Reed (R-Jasper) told WSFA. “We encourage him to seek help and will be there for emotional and spiritual support.”

Ward was first elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 2002 and served two terms before being elected to the Senate in 2010. He was elected to a second term in the Senate last November. He also serves as Executive Director of the Alabaster Industrial Development Board, a post he has held since 2001.

His profile in the Senate has risen significantly in recent years as he became Chairman of the influential Senate Judiciary Committee. His name has also frequently come up in discussions about possible 2018 attorney general candidates.

This story will be updated as more details become available.
