MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn) announced to legislators on the floor Thursday morning that the state’s email system has been hacked, warning members not to open any emails on their state accounts.
“We don’t know if it’s North Korea or not,” Hubbard half-jokingly told members.
Cheri Martin, deputy secretary of the Alabama Office of Information Technology, confirmed that the hack had occurred, but could not yet provide information of how extensive it may have been.
This isn’t the first time Alabama’s state email system has been hacked. In 2012 the group “Anonymous” took credit for infiltrating the system to express their opposition to the state’s immigration law.
